The 2024 competition will take place on Saturday afternoon, 27 April, on the EPFL campus. Registration is compulsory (by parents) and will open in February 2024. For pupils currently in Harmos 10, the selection process is different. Please consult the following page: 10H competition. Before leaving this page, please take the time to watch the videos at the bottom of the page to get an idea of the kind of courses we offer.
What the Euler course is ?
An attractive video clip (less than two minutes) with student testimonials and images of a lesson. Prepared by Laureline Duvillard and Alain Herzog, Mediacom, EPFL.
Principle of the course
From the 2008-2009 school year, EPFL and the Departments of Public Education of the cantons of Geneva, Jura and Vaud launched mathematics courses specially designed for children with very high potential in French-speaking Switzerland, as a complement to the traditional school curriculum. The cantons of Valais and Neuchâtel soon joined them, and from 2010 the entrance exam was open to pupils from these five cantons. Since 2014, we have also welcomed students from the canton of Fribourg.
These courses are taught by doctoral students, postdocs and researchers in mathematics at EPFL. The full programme, which runs for six years, includes both the secondary school mathematics curriculum (from Harmos 9 to Maturité) and subjects normally taught at university level.
The first selection competition, in which 178 students took part, was held in October 2008. More details about the 2008 competition, including the pdf file of the exam and the answers to the questions, can be found under Competition 2008. The inaugural class of the Euler Course began its first cycle on 29 October 2008 and will complete the full programme in June 2014.
Since 2009, we have held an entrance exam every year at the end of the school year (end of April, beginning of May). The tenth entrance exam was held in 2017. More information under Competitions.
The organising bodies have made a point of accompanying this programme with individualised, real-life coaching.
Philanthropy
The Euler course is one of the initiatives of the Revealing Talents section of the Student Support Program, a philanthropic initiative that supports students’ educational careers. We would like to thank PPG, the sponsors who wish to remain anonymous, and the donors who are parents of Euler students for their generous support.
